Homebrew FAQ & Saison recipe

•11/23/2008 • 1 Comment

Guten tag,

I am a brewer. Yes, I make my own beer. I will now answer the most common questions I hear about the great hobby.

Is the beer good?

Yes, the beer is good and you should try it because what you probably normally buy has no body or hops and is made with mostly rice and corn because they are cheap.

How much beer do you make?

5 gallons at a time.

How long does it take?

It ferments in a food-grade sanitized plastic bucket for 2 weeks or so, where it converts the malt sugars into alcohol, then it spends 2 to 3 weeks in bottles with a little extra added sugar where it becomes carbonated.

How do you get the caps on?

My homebrew kit came with a small hand-held capping press.

What kind of beers do you make?

I make ales (as opposed to lagers) because they are ready quicker and turn out better if you can only ferment at room temperature. The type of brewing I do is called extract brewing, because some of the base malt is already processed into a condensed syrup (as opposed to all-grain brewing which is brewing from scratch). Here’s what a recipe looks like..   it’s for a Saison which is a Belgian-style ale:

How long have you been homebrewing?

I first bought a kit and brewed a batch about 5 yrs ago, but became more serious about around 2 yrs ago. I just entered my first competition. Yes there are frequently competitions in most states.. the judges all go through a certification process. Here is what a homebrew scoresheet looks like..

Thanks for reading. You should try homebrewing sometime, or at least start trying new craft/microbrews; you might like them.

The Most Prolific Poet of All Time

•10/23/2008 • 1 Comment

hello,

please help me to become the most prolific poet of all time: try out the VERBASIZER (click it)!

what is the verbasizer?

the verbasizer is a random poem generator. it is a simple php script i wrote while learning php programming. i initially got the idea after reading about a bit of software by the same name that david bowie used to sort words into parts of speech lists to make his famous, often cryptic, lyrics.

if this violates your copyright laws, mr. bowie, please don’t sue me; perhaps i can work with you and develop a new version. besides i don’t think the original was released to anyone.

wha? how?

basically it draws from lists of all the parts of speech and attempts, in a crude grammar algorithm, to form a poem. the lengths vary, the sentence constructions vary, and most importantly.. the quality varies! it ranges from sweet and profound to hipster esoteric to complete garbage.

here are a few random samples:

the shadowed abyss leads sadly
white-hot view resonates
ours receive
many evacuate unlike the conflict

the enlightened battle strikes
sadly past the shadowed feeling

after the blood
some suspend
towards the desert no one seeks

try it out for yourself.. THE VERBASIZER. the code is all open-source and available for you to manipulate, improve, destroy, or turn into whatever you like. you can even email your poem to your friends.

THE VERBASIZER click to try it.

guten tag everyone

thank you for visiting. i will be updating fairly regularly.. and my plans right now are not to follow any particular theme right away. what are some things you can expect to see peppered about?

  • stories
  • images
  • videos
  • downloads
  • zombies

to start things off nice and intimate, because conditions are perfect, i’d like to offer you a handwritten handwriting.

what do you mean, cwylie0?

well i will tell you my friend.. i have created a font out of my handwriting. psycho-analyze it all you want.

it goes a little something like this:

download it right here, wow.

how did you do this, cwylie0?

the short answer is: don’t worry about it, because you:

a)aren’t as good at computers as cwylie0 or
2)you have friends/ball and chain/spawn/real job/a rash.

the answer if you are still reading is:

  1. print out a font template like the one found here.
  2. fill it out however you want! make your “J” into a :O if you want. it’s your font.
  3. scan that puppy real big and nice.
  4. cut and paste the individual characters from photoshop to a font editor (i used this one).
  5. save, use. (i’m not going into detail about installing fonts b/c that’s easy and boring; google it).

you’re welcome!
